There are two main mountain ranges in Ningbo, that is to say, Mt. Siming and Mt. Tiantai. With rivers such as the Yuyao River, the Fenghua River, the Yong River, etc, it has abundant water resources and regarded as one of the eight largest river basins. Besides, Ningbo covers a sea area of 9,578 sq. km., with a zigzagging coastline of 1,562 km. of which 788 km. are of the continent while 774 km. of the isles, accounting for one third of the total length of the coastline in Zhejiang Province. Scattered with numerous isles with a total area of 524.07 sq. km., Ningbo holds two inlets, namely, the Sanmeng Inlet and the Hangzhou Inlet, as well as a harbor called Xiangshan Harbor, which provide sufficient nourishments for mudflat and inshore creatures, for the inflowing water, from rivers such as the Qiantang River, the Yong River, etc, together with many streams, brings plenty of foodstuffs with it.

Along the coast of Ningbo, the tide falls into that of the irregular semi-diurnal type, with two high ones and two low ones per day. The average height of high tides is 3.14 meters above the zero point at Wusong with the greatest height of 4.86 meters while that of low tides 1.47 meters with the smallest one of 0.31 meters.

Located in the subtropical zone with a monsoon climate, Ningbo has a mild temperature with distinct four seasons. With a frost-free period ranging from 230 to 240 days and a crop-producing period of 300 days, it is suitable for the growth of crops including grains, cottons, oil plants, etc.

Ningbo does not lie in the earthquake zone, and therefore has no historical record of earthquakes that bring about severe sufferings. Also no record has been found in the regions around Ningbo of catastrophes due to thunders and lightning, floods, droughts, etc. Besides, as located in front of Beilun harbor is the Zhoushan Archipelago which functions as a screen against natural disasters, there was no record of disastrous typhoons during recent years.

As there are no latent threats for natural catastrophes, it is unnecessary to take into consideration disasters such as typhoons, thunders and lightning, floods, droughts, etc, in the course of the designing and construction of plants. Precautions are taken in accordance with the antiseismic standards against earthquakes with a Ritchter magnitude of 6, while a plant may be designed and constructed in line with the antiseismic standards against earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 if a higher level of stability is required for its equipments.

Geology

The geological structure units belong to the Huaxia belt of folded strata in the Southern China system of folded strata, lying in the Xingchang-Dinghai of the Lishui-Ningbo geosynclinal convex. Besides, the earth surface rock belongs to Jurassic Period volcanic rock series, in possession of three rock types, namely, felsophyre, rhyolite and with a dry compression strength of 1,300-2,500 MPa., admitting of a earth resistance of 300-400 KPa., an ultimate resistance of 400-500 KPa., and an ultimate side frictional resistance of 100-120 KPa.
